TITLE OF SHOW: Zariwalla's Threads [pronounced ZJARH-ree-wall-lahs]

LENGTH OF SHOW: 45-60-MINUTES

INTERMISSION 15-minutes

THEME [one sentence description]: Folktales from India are the basis for this colourfully detailed show of delightful characters that surround a theme of friendship.

CONTENT [brief description: This show was created specifically to deal with war zones such a Croatia and Bosnia. Using folk-tales from a culture that would be foreign to the Balkan ones, Bob and Dana sought to under-score the themes of friendship, self-empowerment, graciousness, dignity and the ability to laugh at one’s self which underlie all culture, celebrating their similarities and raising a gracious awareness of their difference which need not be the cause of wars, Charming and impudent mice, a hungry sparrow, a partridge, a pious cat, a very diplomatic lion, a self-less camel, a conniving crow, a stupid leopard, a conspiratorial fox, the wind, the sun, the mountain, the cloud -– all become examples of the embroidered richness of the human experience we all share in common.

GOAL [the purpose of this show]: To witness , in an amusing, entertaining way, the need for understanding among all peoples so that we may all celebrate the variety of solutions we have all created for the same situations and problems with which we all have to deal.

POINT OF VIEW OF ARTISTS: Bob and Dana have travelled to Croatia since 1991, bringing hope and joy and laughter to refugees and victims of the war-torn areas in the Balkans. it has become not just a rewarding experience for them, but an essential part of their creative work to lift people’s spirits. In fact, their motto has always been, “Moving the Human Spirit!” This production is a continuation of that work and that point of view.

CLASSIFICATION [i.e.: ADULT, FESTIVAL, FAMILY, YOUNG AUDIENCE]: Festival and Family audiences. This show has played in outdoor theatres, in refugee camps on islands, in hospitals, at sea-side resorts, in conference auditoria to enthusiastic family and young people’s audiences.

PRESENTATION [skills used to present show]: At the back of the stage is an 18’-vertical tapestry from India. To either side there are tamboi [pronounced Tam-BOO-ie] or brightly patterned, 8’-cloth pillars covered with beautiful birds and wonderful elephants. The rest of the stage area ia a white dance floor, completely open for lots of movement and physical characterizations. The lime-green trunk sits up-stage left, full of costume pieces, hats and props, and out of which explode dozens of characters. Physical energy and very strong physical characterizations are the main element of the story-telling. The basic costumes are white dhoti and kurta with the additions of vibrant cloaks, capes, exotic hats and turbans and beautiful, whirling silks of saffron, royal purple and rich crimson reds.
